Putting in its own thread, it really bothers me when these articles on the role of tech in spreading simplifications and misinformation themselves have simplifications. Do you think "only 17% of people over the age of 65 were able to identify fact from opinion" is a fair reading?pic.twitter.com/1HaDN0sBfo

Like maybe you could say "people over 65 scored somewhat worse on a test of classifying factual statements". Or if you're going to pretend (don't) that getting them all right is a binary cutoff for "the ability to identify fact from opinion" at least compare to other age groups!

This isn't new. "44% of Americans get their news from Facebook" made the rounds a while back. I put a bunch of examples in this thread: https://twitter.com/xenocryptsite/status/800487517149601792 … But in the actual study they were all quoting, 44% was the percentage who "EVER get news or news headlines on Facebook".

      Xenocrypt added,

      Xenocrypt @xenocryptsite
At Ars Technica, "44% have seen news on Facebook" became "44% of Americans rely on Facebook to get ALL THEIR NEWS". pic.twitter.com/Gd2BIQlDus

But this became "44% of Americans rely on Facebook to get all their news", "Facebook is where 44% of Americans get their news", "Facebook is the primary driver for how a huge number of Americans get their news (44 percent of them, actually!)", etc.

The irony of course is that this process of bias-confirming pseudo-facts spreading by thoughtless repetition is, itself, what all these articles are supposedly warning against. Physician, heal thyself and so on.

Anyway, now "Facebook and/or Fox News is why old people don't know the difference between fact and opinion" is the thing that will spread. How many people will click through and look at the actual study results? How many will just share variations of that sentence?

Didn't you just prove this argument by attempting to refute it?

Like you said—people disseminate this stuff reflexively in such a way that all context and nuance is lost. Even when the thing being spread is about the importance of context and nuance in the dynamic of sharing stuff online.

I mean, it is what I said, which is why I was confused that you were repeating it.
