I think the assumption by supporters is that the black market is a small fraction of total usage, and Bitcoin survives while reducing the ability of financial institutions to restrict economic activity in this way.

I don't believe it, in part because the only people sufficiently incentivized to put up with the hassle and expense of cryptocurrency might be black marketeers (and ideologues), but there's the argument.

My hope is that cryptocurrency will provide an open backing network for services that don’t want to depend on ACH and SWIFT, both of which are hot garbage.
