One curious thing I found in FEC snorkeling was that the sugar lobby pays enormous amounts of money to Don Young in Alaska. Most industries don't give money to every conceivable politician, like people think they do, but the sugar companies and beer wholesalers are all about it

i imagine the cost-benefit analysis of political donations is only marginally connected to the districts where your industry exists... if anything it may be inverse, since a politician in a district reliant on an industry may be naturally predisposed to the industry's interests

oh, you're right... he once was. he's currently "chair emeritus", which I assume is some title designed primarily to continue peddling influence

It's a courtesy title. One argument Young's opponent is using in her campaign against him is that due to his incredibly long tenure, he has termed out of all his chairmanships, and can't get new ones because of ethics problems
