Three big ag issues in Scholten’s stump speech: ag company consolidation, abuse of small refinery waivers that depresses corn prices, and trade wars that cut off Iowa farmers from markets
First question is on immigration. JD talks about a new citizen he met—it took her 17 years and $17k to get naturalized. Executives at pork plants in the district have talked about the need for an immigrant workforce. The immigration system is broken and needs reform
In 1984, rural democrats represented 80% of this district. Now Steve King represents it, while rural Democrats are almost extinct, and the party is dominated by the coasts
JD: Steve King could be the agriculture committee chair, but instead he is not even on the Farm Bill conference committee. His dereliction of duty to farmers in his district deserves attention in addition to his many reprehensible remarks
Someone asks for a show of hands on who voted early. Nearly all hands go up. Local woman was early voter #2283 in this small town
Next question is on JDs position on gun control. Answers that there is vast common ground, but any attempt to put through common sense measures is thwarted by special interests
Question on wages from a single mom working 12 hours/day in mental health care, earning $3 over minimum wage with $40k in student loans. Jesus. JD calls policies that value wealth over work to be unacceptable
Questioner presses JD to put out yard signs. JD says to big applause that there are more signs for him in Sioux County, one of the most conservative in America, than for Steve King
JD introduces Deb Jensen who is running for Iowa house district 7, and has knocked every Democrat and Independent door in her district. Independents she’s met are undecided with one exception-they’re all voting for Scholtenpic.twitter.com/fHA0Q8C5mL
Once again, zero mention of Trump or anything currently in the national media plot line. Maybe they talk about that stuff in those vaunted diners national reporters are always visiting
