That's kind of the drum I've been beating, so I'm biased. But I think anyone at the middle layer of a profitable large corporation can tell stories of staggering waste and inefficiency, and grandiose product initiatives that failed. The mistake here is seeing Google as different

Yeah, HP-ization is an excellent way to put it. A lot of engineers at Google are having a rude awakening about who they work for, but it ultimately says more about them than about the company.
