As someone who works and is friends with a lot a ex Google folks, i can say pretty confidently this story is typical of careers there (and all of the large tech companies, honestly).

I don't agree with the characterization of OP as entitled. These big companies pump up employees, telling them how they willl change the world. The realities of navigating the corporate morass and the accompanying disillusionment is a real loss of innocence moment for many.

Mike you 100% nailed it - I've made the exact comparison myself recently (and have seriously considered leaving for fintech). Probably only a vocal minority this happens to. Majority is either all-in on the Kool aid or purely mercenary.
