I wonder how divorced our military hardware has to become from reality before paying for it becomes a political issue. We operate strategic bombers that cost $1B each. A big chunk of our 'air superiority' fleet just got destroyed on the ground by a hurricane.

The main job of the US military for the past forty years has been dropping bombs on Toyota Hiluxes. Couple that with an unspeakably vast procurement budget, and you get some pretty baroque projects, like the F-35 or the US Navy's ridiculous stealth ship

Experts will explain why it makes perfect sense for a tropical cyclone moving at 30 mph to destroy an air superiority squadron on the ground, but I think this is one of those situations where it helps not to be an expert

What if it had been a submarine base hit instead of an aircraft base? Should an SSBN just fire up the ol' nuclear reactor with only a few days' notice and hope it works out for everyone?

I actually do agree that our acquisition approach to date has been fairly stupid but there's a lot missing in this discussion about what it takes to put military aircraft in the air.
