This is an important read from @Pinboard . I, of course, want his candidates and party to lose, because their policies are wrong and destructive. But his observations on how elections work are not obvious to campaign outsiders, and are fascinating. http://idlewords.com/2018/10/portrait_of_a_campaign.htm …

I've previously said - admittedly from a point of nearly-pure ignorance - that elections are about turnout, not about winning undecided voters over to your side. Maciej's post suggests that I'm flat-out wrong about that, and that he's ready to bet a million bucks on it.

He also suggests that the election machinery is actually not very much about securing victories for parties or candidates in difficult contests and instead is about reinforcing incumbents in secure seats while funneling huge fortunes to insiders and consultants. I believe this.

What's great, though, is that fighting/ignoring this kind of insider electoral machinery is exactly how Trump won! I suppose that's bad news for me, because it means that Maciej's candidates might be able to win that way as well. Probably not, though. Trump is a master at it.

Thanks for the kind words about the post! I'd be very curious to learn if Republican House campaigns' experience with the NRCC is analogous, or if things work differently on the other side of the aisle.

You should go make some friends on the other side! You'll have so much to talk about. I'm pretty sure everyone likes donuts.

I'm all for it, but it's the nature of the game that it's hard to meet people actively involved in this work from the other side. Also I've come to think the situation is not that symmetrical—there aren't many scrappy Republican first-timers running on fumes in D+4 districts
