It did make the New York Times, not that quiet

Replying to @Pinboard
Do you think it’s made up just because they don’t want their names in the piece? I truly don’t understand your criticism.

The critique here is that we have a disproportionate amount of power as software engineers and we should put our money where our mouths are. Take a stand, not in some quiet way that serves our employers but loudly in a way that implicates them and encourages reform.

And not everyone is in a position to just quit, but some do it: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/05/google-employees-resign-in-protest-of-googlepentagon-drone-program/ … https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/09/14/google-employees-quitting-over-its-china-search-project/ …

Quitting is one strategy. Going public and making them fire you for your protest is maybe a better path to the same personal outcome, right?

Maybe? This feels like splitting hairs about practice, though. The idea that internal organizing is completely ineffective, and by definition useless (or even cowardly) is not one that I buy.

And re: aiming for more: sure! Of course! This is a start, though, not a total cop out and/or distraction, as
@pinboard seems to think.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
A start implies more to come. Until we see this organization grow teeth I think the critique is valid. Facebook employees on average generate negative net utility and gathering and saying that they don’t like that then stopping after a token concession is... well, critiqueworthy.

The people I know aren't stopping. And I'm sick of
@pinboard spitting at these efforts. There are (long overdue) discussions in these spaces that are finally happening. You can criticize how long it took, but don't criticize the fact that people are engaging with the problem.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
Best way to make me look like an asshole is to prove me wrong. I (honestly) wish you the best of luck
