"Open internal revolt" is a fascinating phenomenon in big Silicon Valley companies. It's like the time Facebook last February when FB held their giant rally against the travel ban but kept it quiet outside the company. The silent resistance from within! https://twitter.com/MikeIsaac/status/1047955512870895616 …

Do you think it’s made up just because they don’t want their names in the piece? I truly don’t understand your criticism.

The critique here is that we have a disproportionate amount of power as software engineers and we should put our money where our mouths are. Take a stand, not in some quiet way that serves our employers but loudly in a way that implicates them and encourages reform.

And not everyone is in a position to just quit, but some do it: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/05/google-employees-resign-in-protest-of-googlepentagon-drone-program/ … https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/09/14/google-employees-quitting-over-its-china-search-project/ …

Quitting is one strategy. Going public and making them fire you for your protest is maybe a better path to the same personal outcome, right?

Maybe? This feels like splitting hairs about practice, though. The idea that internal organizing is completely ineffective, and by definition useless (or even cowardly) is not one that I buy.

I don't think internal organizing is ineffective. But I aver that most of what people call internal organizing is really blowing off steam, and they are getting repeatedly played by management that has grown skilled at placating them.

People do get played sometimes. But the skills are improving, I think. There's now real coordination, press strategies, etc. on the worker side. It's getting somewhere.

I hope you're right!
