On this day when we need it most, I can't even retweet @infinite_scream anymore because they added the hammer and sickle to the username–the confederate flag for lefties. #Aaaaaaaaaaaugh

i appreciate your work and i used to follow you so it's frustrating to see you do this like any of us have the choice to opt out of capitalism regardless of what we believe were you traumatized by a hammer and sickle emoji in the past or is this just kind of random lashing out

To me and a lot of people with my background, the symbol is emotionally loaded in the way a confederate flag is for Americans. It symbolizes the subjugation of my country and family by a system that wasted the potential of three generations, and caused great suffering and death

Many people (including some with political views far to the left of you or me) have asked politely in various venues for the left to stop using this symbol, given the great crimes that were committed under it. We get met with ridicule and abuse by people who have lived in comfort

The left is normally quick to abandon problematic speech or iconography that causes division, but the hammer and sickle seems to be an exception. All I ask is that people realize that by using it, they are alienating many potential friends and allies who grew up under this system

thank you for explaining your position on this in good faith. honestly, this is what your original post should have been, because what it actually was does not effectively communicate the point you are trying to make (this is actually an ongoing, uh, discussion on the left btw)

To put a sharper edge on it, imagine someone you like putting a fascist symbol in their twitter handle. Would you respond with a careful exposition of why it is poor form? It’s a bit of a kick in the teeth

Being a communist doesn't mean you're a stalinist. This just feels like "both sides" horseshoe theory. Saying radical leftists and facists are the same is hilarious

I’m talking about iconography specifically. It’s important we be careful to talk about the same thing, or we’ll just talk past each other
