The biggest flaw with the Clinton email server story was that there was an outside referent: those emails actually existed somewhere. The current media obsession with who might get fired or is thinking of resigning brings us closer to the perpetuum mobile of political clickbait.

That's a great point. I noticed, a few years ago, a creeping inflation of what I called "pre-news": speculative, dramatizing articles about things which have not happened yet (and readers can't influence). It took practice to stop clicking on those articles.
