You can evade this entire piece of theater by going down the empty staircase on the right and waiting on the platform like God intended. Amtrak employees may yell at you, but are too lazy to follow you.

Is the “Gate” thing an attempt to make Americans who only travel by air feel more at ease?
-
Amtrak has this thing that it wants to be the airlines--they even do "priority boarding announcements"--ignoring the fact that everyone hates the airlines.

I actually have sympathy for it because the actual platform there is so hot and shitty that this makes the inevitable half-an-hour-in-advance line form above ground instead of on stairs and underground

I don't even understand what's happening here... Aren't multiple trains constantly arriving and leaving from these platforms? What are they making people wait for. It wasn't like that the last time I was there.
-
They check that you have a ticket before you're allowed on the platform. They didn't used to, but it's a post 9/11 security measure.

I hope you at least enjoyed the last of the mechanical flippy arrivals boards at 30th Street Station
