This place is closer to Baltimore than to Lancaster. Shout-out to @AoDespair — these doors aren’t going to knock themselves!
Another York county organizer, who had never been politically active before: “the values of this administration are not the American values I grew up with. There’s a ‘catch me if you can’ brazenness to those now in power.”
I asked Jess the secret of doing 11 town halls in one weekend, like she’s doing now. Early on, she did 16 events in one weekend, and everything since has been easy
First question is about the cost of education. Jess is running on debt-free public college, financed in part by Federal taxes on high-frequency algorithmic trading. GI bill is a model for growing a middle class
Second question is on how to bridge the divide between left and right in government. Jess sees the real divide as bottom vs top. Three Americans own as much as half of us
Third question is how to bring in deeply alienated working people from coal and industrial backgrounds, who have suffered deeply. Jess talks about bringing multinational corporate jobs back down to Main Street—a political choice
Question on Medicare: how do we fund Medicare and health care, with benefits going down every year. Example of getting an Rx for a $300 medicine even with good insurance
Answer again is about a moral choice. 70% of people including a majority of Republicans support universal care. We pay twice as much as any other country for care that doesn’t cover everyone. Purely to enrich corporate plutocracy
Question on immigration reform. Jess says the issue is being used as a weapon to divide us. She’s the descendant of religious refugees—so is her opponent. We need a workable legal pathway for immigration, which benefits our communities. Status quo is broken
Now a briefing on the monumental get out the vote effort that will mobilize York county. Summer was about persuasion, but that is only half the battle
