Again I have to make this distinction: 1. Dayton, OH specifically, and Great Lakes area in general, has had a significant decline in relative economic status (true!). 2. There's a "growing concentration of wealth in a small handful of cities" (have not seen a great argument!).https://twitter.com/noamscheiber/status/1039586498100846592 …

Fascinating @AlecMacGillis story on the growing concentration of wealth in a small handful of cities, the social consequences of which we're only beginning to understand. https://www.propublica.org/article/how-struggling-dayton-ohio-reveals-the-chasm-among-american-cities …

Like the article compares income in other metros to income in the Dayton metro--which would of course conflate those two things! But here's per capita income in the New York MSA relative to the US as a whole. Wow that's...really skyrocketing lately.pic.twitter.com/oPK5GoJP80

I shouldn't say I haven't seen a great argument for ANY "increasing geographic concentration of wealth/income". I just think it's relatively mild, at least by county. You might look by zip code or something.https://twitter.com/xenocryptsite/status/936095036885946369 …

      Xenocrypt added,

      Xenocrypt @xenocryptsite
The top quintile of counties (by population) have gone from ~26%-27% of US personal income to ~29% and this is about the most you can say about "economic concentration" by that measure. pic.twitter.com/GkKlGf5oeM

Or here's the percent of US personal income going to Manhattan, San Francisco, King County WA, Santa Clarita County CA, and DC proper. It has increased!...but from like, 3.4% of national income to 4.6%. Titanic shift in political economy, I guess people think!pic.twitter.com/k791KozrDZ

Even the article, which I haven't actually read, says "You’ll find similarly widening gaps if you substitute Dayton with St. Louis or Milwaukee or Fresno or Buffalo". Notably, four of those five cities are in the same "greater Great Lakes" region!

If "increasing geographic concentration of wealth" were the explanation, then IMO you could use pretty much anywhere--you could use South Carolina, Wisconsin (as a whole), Minnesota, Colorado, and you'd see the same thing you see for metro Dayton. But do you see the same thing?pic.twitter.com/tKhLnE56HM

And leads to hard questions...Is there some reason, specifically, that Dayton "deserves" to be UNUSUALLY well-off within the US, to have more income per capita than Colorado or Minnesota or Wisconsin, as it used to? That's the thing about relative economic status, it's relative.
