But Scotland is a nation, but not a state, and the UK is a state, but not a nation - whereas Portugal is a nation-state - it just means something totally different this side of the Atlantic

Gordon, I'm curious, if i say "the state"— not "a state" but just abstractly refer to "the state did X thing"— what would that wording mean to you?

yes, 'the state' as an abstract here would be the agents of government in all their glory

But it wouldn't imply anything to you about *which level* of government, it could just be whichever level? I'm getting away from Mr. Board's point here, I'm just curious

Not really because none of our intermediate layers in the UK are also called states - it gets a bit messy with European institutions - but they lack police or criminal powers, so is The European Medicines Agency 'the state'? it kinda is, but maybe not

One thing I do know tho, we call all the computers, servers, network devices in an org 'the estate' and when you say that in the US hella confusion ensues ;-)

Uhhhh Canadian girlfriend is sitting right next to me and she is as baffled by this as i am America/Canada "the estate" refers only ever to the property and legal wishes of a person who has just died. The provisional Texas/Toronto english language consortium is in agreement here
