One thing Facebook and Twitter share in common is that they have socialized the high costs of a tech bro's journey of philosophical self-discovery. The core crisis here is not about free speech or disinformation, but accountability and governance.
It's like one of those absolute monarchies where a boy-king gets the throne and proves to be out of his depth. We can hope for better boy-kings; we can hope that @jack listens to the right audiobook. Or we can dismantle the system where a single tech bro makes these decisions
And I'm sorry to say that part of the blame here lies on Twitter employees, who have been complaining bitterly for two years or more inside the company, but have not done anything to rein in their CEO's poor judgement, or even make him work at Twitter full-time
Curious what you think the employees can do. One can be a squeaky wheel, but if the powers that be are unwilling to listen, there are few options.
Not sure unions are the answer in that particular case. While I think it can do a lot for the SV set, it won't address customer/product issues.
Collective action is the tool employees can use to get policies adopted, not an end in itself. What policies they push for is entirely up to them. But it's a way to use their considerable latent power.
