It's like one of those absolute monarchies where a boy-king gets the throne and proves to be out of his depth. We can hope for better boy-kings; we can hope that @jack listens to the right audiobook. Or we can dismantle the system where a single tech bro makes these decisions
And I'm sorry to say that part of the blame here lies on Twitter employees, who have been complaining bitterly for two years or more inside the company, but have not done anything to rein in their CEO's poor judgement, or even make him work at Twitter full-time
I'm not sure this is unique to tech, the great man myth is pretty core to capitalism. What I think is unique to big tech is revenue per employee is so high that developing expertise isn't seen as an option. Scalability (so dumb software) is the only way to keep that ratio up.
The current machine learning craze seems to stem from this attitude. It's seen as better to have software that even it's creators don't know how it works compared to relying on people who can be held accountable.
All it used to take was Steve Jobs & Woz dropping acid in the woods together to understand their place in the interconnectedness of society. @jack & Zuck had to summon the Fourth Reich before they got it.
