This is why criticism of Facebook and Google as "selling people's data" are not just wrong, but counterproductive. Both companies are exceptionally vigilant about protecting their users, and protecting their users' data. There is enormous benefit to the web from this vigilance.

At the same time, the business model that powers these giants is incompatible with democracy or human freedom. Their technical competence and ethical self-righteousness has removed any restraint on instrumenting their users' lives, or selling manipulation as a service.

That business model has also brought the masses access to incredible technology and information for free. We do pay for Gmail and Google Search with our data, but I think the value of that exchange is worth considering, especially for those who couldn't otherwise afford all this
