I find security keys easier to setup and maintain than MFA apps such as Google Authenticator. So many times I’ve left the device with the specific auth app at home, or replaced a defective device without transfering data. I find the key simpler, too, but to use it you have to set up things like Authenticator as a backup, which adds to the complexity.

I know I have both but didn’t catch it was a requirement - I know I did printed backup codes during the AP setup…the setup definitely is involved.

It's a requirement for the way we tell people to configure it, making sure that SMS recovery is not an option. It's not just the complexity, but the intimidation factor, too.
