There are plenty of people from Finland who can communicate effectively in English without being asses, and he also has a long record of turning would-be contributors off. His achievement is not obviously a result of his using that style, though they have in fact coöccured.

If we owe Linus restraint and deference when talking about the way he communicates because of his different country/culture of origin, then surely he owes his interlocutors of different countries/cultures restraint and deference when communicating with them.

"Record of achievement" is a fraught argument. Someone who's talented may be able to succeed in spite of--and not because of--their communications style. Tech idolizes the idea of the rockstar-jerk, to the point that people seem to be jerks to reinforce that they are rockstars.
