Reminder: Russia is engaged in a massive years-long campaign to undermine Western power, alliances and democracy by using our openness as societies and the fears and ignorance of our voters and the greed and lack of principles of many of our political leaders against us.https://twitter.com/paul__johnson/status/1005902921182085121 …

This is an updated version of the McCarthy-era red scare. Russian interference is an opportunistic infection of our democracy, like thrush. The root cause is domestic and we need to ask ourselves why we were susceptible to any of this.

Except it’s been shown over and over and over again that Russia has actively undermined western democracies using a variety of tools. Keep burying your head in the sand though, I’m sure the answer’s down there somewhere.

My point is that it's been trying to do that for about eighty years, and not suddenly become good at it. It's not Russia that got sixty million Americans to vote for Trump.

Russians have been very good at subverting intelligence agencies for years. In ‘87, while Russians targeted Japanese industry, Trump placed ads in 3 major papers parroting their exact language. The same year, he also said he’s not interested in politics, except the presidency.

I have no doubt that Trump is in the pocket of the Russians, and has been for some time.

Then why claim this is red scare nonsense

Because the Russian operations are opportunistic and have nothing to do with what put Trump in office, or keeps him there. McCarthyism also had a kernel of truth ("there are forrmer Communists in the civil service") but was a purely American political pathology

So you accept that Trump has been a Russian stooge since at least ‘87, but they had nothing to do with his election? Your appeals to the past ring hollow.

Do you think the people who voted for Trump were Russian stooges? My point is not that Russian meddling didn't occur, but that it's a sideshow to the actual crisis.

I think you’re ignoring the actual cause of our demise with the proximate cause of our demise. Public education and social media are problems contributed as well. Not sure if you think these are issues - you haven’t supported your position with much other than McCarthyism.
