      Surprisingly doesn't have a straightforward answer. It has to do with how we calculate the dielectric constant which depends on how tightly outer shell electrons are bound to nuclear cores.

      I love how complex the world is. I’m inspired by how deeply faceted every seemingly simple question really is. It restores my wonder of existence. None of this held in our hands or eyes should be. But it’s there. And whatever root explanation you have, we should rejoice in it.

      One thing I liked about physical chemistry in college is that you can study a glass of water with ice cubes in it for pretty much a year, and it just keeps getting weirder. Bubble a little radon in there and you could probably get out all of physics.
