What's weird about this moment is that founders and higher-ups at Google have enough clout and residual idealism that they could move the company's entire business model away from mass surveillance and investors and shareholders would just have to accept it.

Similarly, Google employees have skills that are so hard to find in quantity that they could collectively demand changes to the core business model, and those demands would be met, as Google cannot afford to antagonize its workforce. But these windows of opportunity are closing.
