They opened it up to the public the last year or two. And there are other events outside the convention center as well. Used to be just a media event.
E3 is more of a "professional" event for media and companies. Public just got access for past year cause the hosting organization was bleeding money from the event.. This isnt like twitchcon or other similar public events...

Oh I know... Im in the industry(9years) and have never paid for a pass... Tickets day of the event are 995. All the sweaty neckbeards stink up the place, so I just find my like minded black folks that I worked with and meet up with them...

The industry does have a problem with "entitled" public supporters that are not a part of the industry but use trolling tactics to prompt responses from devs. Nobody likes shock tubers/streamers and we shit on that group of people daily...
