In http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=13439 they are concluding - with various caveats - that the overall luminosity of the star has dropped by over 20% ... but how could one distinguish that from a dust formation effect? Does anyone measure the *full* SED of Alf Ori on a regular basis?
-
Unfortunately this is not possible to observe a full SED of Betelgeuse in "one shot" as the instruments (telescopes, detectors) are different depending on the wavelength domains.

I very much believe in the dust formation scenario. What is the standard variation delta_JH expected for RSG? Usually variability amplitude is smaller at longer wavelength.

Very huge amount of dust!
