There's better Gramsci stuff - "primitive infantilism", which can be levelled against most versions of Marxism (though G. was talking about "scientific" materialism); and "pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will", which is just a pretty cool phrase.
Hmmmm. From where exactly does this quote originate? A good jumping off point for Gramsci, and he is worth knowing, is Perry Anderson's New Left Review long essay, "The Antinomies of Antonio Gramsci", first published in the middle-1970s.
