In my school, religious studies was compulsory for the first 3 years. Even aged 11-14, we, almost universally, considered it a joke. If you were religious, then you were going to get teased for it. You would be considered odd.

Of course, my experience isn't universal - it makes a big difference where you live, etc. Nevertheless, for a big chunk of the UK population, religion, and the issue of belief versus disbelief, simply isn't on people's radar. It's not part of the zeitgeist.
