Maybe, lacking empathy may not lead to universalising our own experience or perspectives; but without empathy, I doubt we would ever get beyond our own experience and perspectives.

Hmmm. Not convinced. I think it's possible to understand that other people have their own internal worlds, etc., and that things follow from that - without being able to imagine ourselves in their (internal) world.
