Ooooh, there's agreement amongst sociologists (which there isn't) that settles it then! It's a rhetorical power grab. Of course it's useful to factor in power (not exactly a genius level thought!), but the only one true definition stuff is just a boring political game.
I get irritated because I think there's a political agenda at work - i.e., to co-opt the rhetorical power of the word "racism" for the benefit of marginalized groups. I understand the impulse, but reject it, because it relies on a con trick.
