I really loathe vicious, unthinking, retributivism. But actually I don't wish misery and distress upon people such as Myers who get off on it.

Well exactly. Full throated support of the righteous is easy. Moral outrage in defence of the righteous is easy. Seeing the humanity in moral "monsters" is much more difficult. But it's necessary to safeguard our own humanity.
