How many academics have ever worked a 2-10pm, followed by 7am-3pm shift - which was absolutely a regular occurrence when I worked in nursing & care work?

And, perhaps needless to say, the sorts of hours that are common in care work are destructive to family and social life, and fall disproportionately upon women.

Everyone who has been the primary parent for a newborn has done all these things without pay, FWIW. But yes, I agree that the machismo about long work hours from some quarters is misguided.
