There might well be a reason why many, many people are desperate to be academics, seeing it as a vocation, whereas not so many people view working on a supermarket checkout in the same way.

Pay people in retail more, people in academia less, I say. In fact, academics should probably give away some of their income to shop workers.

Note also how many academics manage to tweet incessantly throughout their onerous working day, whereas that's not so common if you're working on a factory production line. Odd that.

Yep. I've worked in academia, as a line cook, tree-cutter, a janitor, a bartender, at WalMart, in security, and served in the Army (among other things). Academia could be stressful, but was generally less so than those jobs. The exception I'd totally make would be for adjuncts
