Bertrand Russell got caught up in some political fisticuffs (literal fisticuffs). Hustings in the Victorian era used to be riotously violent.

And there was the Poll Tax riots. Violence surrounding the Miners Strike in the 1980s. There were violent anti-Vietnam war demonstrations in the late 1960s. And so on.

It is true, however, that compared to most other European countries, the UK has been comparatively free of revolutionary violence and upheaval. 1688 was our last - and that was more or less peaceful.
