Part of the reason it's important to criticize far left ideology is because it remains intellectually respectable in a way that's not true of far right ideology.
Okay, but if that's true, if you're invoking nationalism in the name of liberal ideals, then you've got to take the pitfalls of nationalism/strong collective identity seriously. Otherwise things might go to hell. There's lots of historical precedent for that.

If a Marxist said to you they didn't have to worry about the consequences of a communist revolution, because the world is fucked up anyway, you'd tell them to sod off. Not sure it's unreasonable for a critic of nationalism to worry about outcomes!
