Part of the reason it's important to criticize far left ideology is because it remains intellectually respectable in a way that's not true of far right ideology.

Yes, the left largely enjoys a political hegemony within academia, the arts, and certain parts of the media. It's regrettable. But I'm a liberal, so collectivism, identity, nationalism - I find them worrying. I don't think they've got a good history.

Okay, but if that's true, if you're invoking nationalism in the name of liberal ideals, then you've got to take the pitfalls of nationalism/strong collective identity seriously. Otherwise things might go to hell. There's lots of historical precedent for that.
