The thing about pile ons is everybody thinks theirs is righteous. But human beings are really, really bad at distancing themselves from the seductions of their in-group, so we shouldn't trust our judgements.
We also take pleasure in self-righteous anger. (Just-so story - it's nature's reward for taking the effort to police social norms.)
