Coyne isn't wrong here. But again, the phenomenon he's describing did not originate with social media, & very conveniently he didn't notice it when he was - in the past - among the perpetrators: https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2018/01/12/pinkergate-the-last-word/ …

The only way to mitigate the effects of tribalism is to avoid tribes; & if you want to avoid tribes, you've got to distance yourself from people with whom you agree; & engage with people with whom you disagree.

Here's a rule of thumb for Twitter. one-third of your tweets should be rebarbative to two-thirds of your audience.

Oh, and one other thing - right now there's a pile on against P. Z. Myers. If you think pile ons are bad, then you shouldn't join in.

The thing about pile ons is everybody thinks theirs is righteous. But human beings are really, really bad at distancing themselves from the seductions of their in-group, so we shouldn't trust our judgements.

This is a basic principle to avoid echo chamber nonsense. If anyone hauls you up on something & engages sensibly with an argument, follow her or him (and drop them later if they’re annoying). At least 1/4 of your TL should be those guys.

Agreed. The only exception would be those people who defend brutalist architecture. Never ever follow them! 🙂🙂🙂

I’m inclined to agree, but then I loved & usually agreed with the late great Gavin Stamp. And brutalism is not modernism, and concrete is not always wrong, as he was the first to stress.
