I first learned about the principle of charity from you (I think via your blog?) several years ago. You don’t seem to be applying it here.

He's absolutely explicit. Women's behavior isn't constrained in the same way as men's because male violence against women is prohibited.

… than unhinged women. One need only watch one or two episodes of Bridezillas to send what he means. Or: https://youtu.be/CRCS6GGhIRc

I don't see how his words can be honestly interpreted as meaning that women aren't ever abused by men. That a hell of a stretch.

perceive threat of violence (in his terms, because of the rules saying men can't hit women). And that's a ridiculous claim (as I stated).

That’s where we disagree. I don’t think it’s ridiculous to claim that western women do not expect violent retaliation from reasonable men…

But that's just an argument by definition (i.e., man not "reasonable" if violent towards a woman), and consequently it's question-begging.

Basically, I think it's absurd to suggest I'd be more fearful of JP punching me because of an argument than women (on average) would...

be fearful they might get punched by a partner during an argument. Women fear male violence (there's lots of evidence to that effect).

If women fear male violence, then JP's argument fails (in general - obviously there will be cases where it is true).

Suspicion is he goes wrong because he thinks all men are like himself (i.e., not going to hit or threaten a woman). Men aren't like that.
