There are ways to fight it: (a) Don't knowingly join in (even if you think the cause is righteous).

(b) If you see somebody under attack, offer them support (or if you can't at least condemn the attack).

(c) If you're under attack yourself, don't apologize, don't capitulate, don't write an agonized mea culpa.

(d) Companies & institutions need to take a stronger line opposing trial by social media - don't fire employees, don't apologize to a mob.

e) Somebody with money should establish a pressure group to speak for & support those under social media attack.

f) And always remember, it's a badge of honor to be attacked by an online twitter mob.

The logic of this example is completely backwards.

Damore didn't get fired because he was chased by an online mob. He became an online celebrity because he was fired (+self-promotion).
