      Doesn't mean it can't be in poor taste or deplorable. E.g. racist/sexist insults are not OK, but for a different reason.

      Not because they hurt the politician (who should be able to put up with it) but because they demean a whole class of people w/o such power.

      Yes, there's a tradeoff. I am sure we miss potentially great politicians. OTOH, criticizing power *in any way* is fundamental to democracy.
