Why would I want somebody who might be an effective conservative if I'm not a conservative? That doesn't make sense. Ideology does count.

@davidfrum . There are many, many parts of the job that are ideologically neutral, and simply require skill. -
But that's neither here if the partisan bits are entirely unpalatable - e.g., implications for Supreme Court.
