I think that people not in the in-group are tired of being blamed for the stuff that the in-group is doing.
It's almost an iron law of politics that ideological puritanism will end up consuming itself. You can never be pure enough.

That is certainly part of the explanation, but it's much harder to leverage it as a justification.
