Not convinced there are sound justifications for retribution either. Some sort of cosmic balancing act? Satisfaction of desires?

@PhilosophyExp One view: Suffering is the only true teacher of compassion, and (many) people want the guilty to learn.
@elsewherever Why only the guilty? That's where retributive impulse comes into play. Why not teach innocent compassion by punishing them?
