4chan 'starting' something (if it was really the actual start) for bad reasons doesn't mean that others can't have good reasons. #GamerGate
@SIN_Notung Agreed. But that failure doesn't rule out supposing that origins are morally significant.

@PhilosophyExp No - agreed. But isn't something a genetic fallacy if it fails to do that extra work but is offered claiming that it does? -
@SIN_Notung worrying about origins, just because it's a genetic fallacy to think that origins are exhaustive, etc. -
@PhilosophyExp Oh, yes I agree with you then. It's like with God - it's not enough to say "religion started for emotional reasons, ... -
@PhilosophyExp ... therefore it's false and God doesn't exist". But origins might have some significance - requiring supplementary arguments -
@SIN_Notung@PhilosophyExp 4chan also did and does a couple of good things, see various AnonOps -
@Aneris23@PhilosophyExp Sure, but I wasn't really talking about the facts of the matter, more the reasoning process involved.

@PhilosophyExp@SIN_Notung similarly you could say "gamergate" was started by a right winger so it is a right wing tag. It isnt -
@JakCharlton@SIN_Notung I know virtually nothing about any of the arguments surrounding gaming. :) -
@PhilosophyExp@SIN_Notung I'm only addressing the fallacy part :) it was started by a prominent right winger, doesn't make it "anti women" -
@JakCharlton@SIN_Notung right-winger (assuming that's a bad thing, of course). -
@PhilosophyExp@SIN_Notung yes it did, it also united thousands of gamers. Does the first in any way invalidate the second? -
@JakCharlton@SIN_Notung Basically, you have to worry about with whom you're getting into bed. it's politically and morally relevant. -
@PhilosophyExp@JakCharlton Granted there, but I'm less convinced with hashtags: Harder to trace origins, less affiliative, and open to all. -
@SIN_Notung@JakCharlton Hmmm. Can't say I've been too keen on the way Suey Park has had her profile raised. - 5 more replies

@PhilosophyExp@SIN_Notung that said, in this case the source was a spark, nothing more, it has always been defined by its 'community'Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
