Some time ago I got this 'so what?' realisation about this "atheist Hitler" business. It assumes that Hitler's views were all that mattered
@sjzara But if his particular views were a necessary condition, then they're fundamentally important even though not "all that mattered"...

@PhilosophyExp Yes, but my point is that they were only a very tiny necessary condition, amongst millions of other necessary conditions.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@PhilosophyExp What enabled Hitler's acts was the views and actions of so many others. They were necessary too. -
@PhilosophyExp At the time, Germany was a solidly Christian country, yet full of views that were necessary for Hitler's actions. -
@sjzara It's more complex than that coz the views of the German populace were significantly shaped by Nazi rhetoric, ritual & propaganda... -
@PhilosophyExp yes, but the point about the views of the German people is rarely if ever made/ -
@sjzara I don't think that's true, actually - take, for example, the Goldhagen thesis. -
@PhilosophyExp I had forgotten about Goldhagen (the concept - I never heard of that name) -
@sjzara It suggests the historical anti-Semitism of German people crucial in understanding the gas chambers ("willing executioners"). - End of conversation

@PhilosophyExp So what I'm saying (I think) is that if you want to look at views that mattered, discussing Hitler is missing the point.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
