@PhilosophyExp More than one horse is need to draw the cart. More than one of these horses are ill.
Should it be: "more than one of these x *are* available" or "more than one of these x *is* available"? More than one is plural, right? No?

@distantcities Got it Thanks. That's probably why "is" sounds okay, but is in fact wrong. My sentence "more than one of these arguments are" -
@PhilosophyExp I agree is sounds clunky, but I think that's right. "Any" is another one that's both sing and plural & often sounds odd.

@philosophyexp Oxford dict. says it goes with a singular verb. "Of these" is not the main clause subject so it does not affect the main verbThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@PhilosophyExp I think it depends whether the predicate is supposed to distribute or collect over the plurality.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@PhilosophyExp It's *are*- it needs to agree with the "more than one" which is a plural. If it was "only one" it would be *is* :)Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
