I was being a little facetious, it's just I'm not sure that specific claim is true. For example, Soviets suppressed religion, witchcraft was actively suppressed, etc, - obviously depends partly on what one takes to be "total bullshit". -
Witchcraft was a bit different. It was suppressed (if you mean 16th & 17th century European and North American trials) because they believed it was true, so they had to punish people who were in league of the devil.
