It's just gatekeeping, innit? If they were honest, they'd say they won't engage for political reasons - they don't want to confer legitimacy upon a particular set of views. But their gatekeeping isn't going to work, and they just end looking like they fear getting trounced.
The fear is well-founded, of course. They would get trounced.
