It's made even more distressing by the fact that what it appears to say nothing more that that humans are distinct from other species because they are self-conscious & have second-order desires. Being beings being beings makes being beings being.

It's possible there's something going on there, which I don't know enough to understand, to do with Brentano's concept of intentionality, which posits a gap between consciousness & its objects, but leaves consciousness itself a negation. H. might be negating the negation.
